Rick Carter and Terry Green opened The Island view at Gulfport. Gulfport is back into the Casino business. Carter and Green, who owned the Copa Casino, now own the only casino in the coast’s largest city. The Gulfside Casino Partnership bought the Grand Casino Gulfport property from Harrah's Entertainment, Inc. in March, 2006. The partnership began in 1993 with the opening of Copa casino, one of the first casinos in Southern Mississippi. This Copa Casino was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. |
The casino was inaugurated on Monday night, 18th September. It opened an hour and half earlier than the scheduled time which gave the people more time to mingle and explore the elegant gambling floor. It was attended by Hundreds of Mississippi Gulf Coast residents, dignitaries and more than 1,000 newly employed casino workers. The inauguration started with the ribbon cutting and the speeches. Gulfport Mayor Brent Warr acknowledged the owners Rick and Terry for investing their money in Gulfport. He said "The Island View Casino Resort is a first-class gaming facility. We are proud to have such a quality gaming project here in Gulfport, and we look forward to the financial boost and the additional jobs the return and expansion of gaming will bring as we continue to rebuild." Leland Speed, executive director of the Mississippi Development Authority, also appreciated the two men. He also commented that Mississippi needed more people like Rick and Terry. Rochelle Harper of Sister Jazz sang at the north entrance. The ice pelicans kept the shrimp cool. |
The resort offers first class amenities with over 500 newly designed hotel rooms and an eloquent 83,000 square foot gaming floor. The casino has a 24-hour, 350-seat buffet. |
It now lodges 1,033 ticket- in/ticket-out slots machines and 14 table games. The owners plan to increase the number very soon to 2400 slot machines and 50 table games. The other plans are to add new restaurants, a sand-beach swimming pool and a covered parking lot. |
With the completion of Phase I, Island View employs 800 staff members. The Phase II which is already underway will be revealed in March 2007. Approximately 1,500 jobs are expected to be created by the end of the second phase. The site where the casino now stands was the old Gulfport Grand Casino Oasis Hotel. Ray Anderson III of Ray Anderson Corp. is the man behind the complete transformation of the hotel to the exquisite casino. Meng Chai, the project manager for contractor Roy Anderson Corp., said that it has been a challenging job to transform a hotel into a full-fledged casino within a short time. He added that the work is not complete. Many of the gamblers at the opening ceremony were people who gambled at Copa and Grand Gulfport before. The Mc Dowell’s added that the Gulfport Grand had been their favorite casino so they had come in to see what the new property looked like. They liked it and so did most of the others. |
