Pennsylvania has its first legal casino parlor. The Mohegan Sun casino opened its doors at 10 a.m. on the 15th of November. Mohegan Sun Casino is operated by the Mohegan Indian tribal council. |
Mohegan Sun casino saw on its opening day, hundreds of gamblers, mostly senior citizens who had been waiting for hours outside the casino in the foggy drizzle, for to have a glimpse into Pennsylvania's first slot-machine parlor. Some people had been waiting as early as 5:30 a.m. The place outside the entrance to the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, just outside Wilkes-Barre was flooding with people more than the rain. The place was Pocono Downs's horseracing track complex. |
The casino has over 1,100 seats and all of these were snatched up in less than 10 minutes. The game floor was filled with people and neat waiting queues were seen three or four deep waiting to have their hand at machines that cost as little as one, two or five cents to play. |
It has been over two years since legislators had authorized gambling to bring in money for property tax relief. It was just last day that this theory gave way to reality. This share of revenue will be used by the state to fund a rent-rebate program for the senior citizens, to reduce property taxes and to reduce Philadelphia wage taxes. |
And Mohegan Sun will be enjoying the privileged monopoly for some time in the market because; it will take over a month for the other legal PA casinos to be approved. The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board will vote on all permanent casino applications on the 20th of December. |
These casinos under approval consideration include Penn National Gaming Inc.'s $310 million Hollywood Casino racing and gambling facility in East Hanover Township, Dauphin County, $300 million Crossroads Gaming Resort and Spa in Straban Township, Adams County. Philadelphia Park is expected to open in Bensalem by next month. An estimated 14 slot casinos are expected to open in Pennsylvania in the next two years. |
The opening ceremony was a very classy one. The new casino was opened by Mr. Bruce "Two Dogs" Boszum, the chairman of the Mohegan Sun's tribal gaming authority. It was conducted in a Native American style. The ceremony started with a small fire by burning white sage that created smoke which the chairman spread about the air by waving an eagle feather. While doing so he chanted a Native American prayer which in short said "Creator, thank you for all you have given us and what you will give." The General Manager, Robert Soper went for a innovative method to the opening instead of the traditional ribbon cutting ceremony It was a countdown, which counted down to pulling an imaginary slot machine handle that exuberantly opened the doors to the casino. |
Mohegan Sun has a rather muted setting compared to the Atlantic City and Las Vegas casinos. The casino has two floors. The gaming area is set in a 90,000 square feet. It has food court which is attached to the grandstand for a harness racing track. The racing track is a part of the complex. |
