Craps is a descendent of the ancient game of Hazard. The origin of hazard is debated to be of English and Arabic. The game has been claimed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre. But Encyclopedia Britannica notes that the game has Arabic origin and the name is from the Arabic word ‘al zar’ which meant dice. French is said to have taken up the game of hazard and changed it to craps. The name craps has originated from the name given to a loosing throw of 2 in the game of hazard. But, this has no documented evidence. It was in 1813 that Bernard de Mandeville of New Orleans created the first version of Craps from Hazard. The game then spread from Mississippi to United States. It was in America that the game had its final evolution to the game that we play today. It was a dice maker Mr. John H Winn who developed the game further. He is known as the Father of Modern Craps. |
The time line can be drawn right from the ancient times of dice gaming. Dices are the oldest gambling tools. Evidence of dice gaming has been found in almost all communities. Roman kings, Egyptians, Indians, Koreans, American-Indians, Arabic and almost all countries has its evidence for dice gaming in its ancient times. Dice history dates to about thousand years old. The history of craps is only about a few hundred years old. |
There were other intermediate variations to Hazard which were simpler and faster than original Hazard. ‘Table off’ was one of it. It was popular in the 19th century. That time the game had a simple layout. It was John h Winn who improved the layouts later. He was the one who invented the craps rules. |
During 20th and 21st century, the popularity of the game rose. The game is also pictured in many movies. Now, when there is the option for the Craps lovers to play the game online, about thousands of people play Craps at online casinos. |
Craps is an exciting game. The whole point of the game is to guess the numbers that will be rolled on a pair of dice. The ‘shooter’ is the one who throws the dice at that time. Other players place their bets before the ‘shooter’ throws the dice. The first roll is called as a ‘come out’ roll. The ‘shooter’ places a bet on the passline and tries to roll a seven or eleven if he succeeds, then he wins even money and makes another bet. If the shooter fails to throw a 7 or 11, then the number on the dice is out up as ‘point’. Now, the aim of the shooter is to roll the ‘point’ before a 7 is rolled. If he fails, to roll the point before a 7, then he looses the game. The ‘point’ can not be removed once established. |
Different types of bets are allowed in a crap’s game. The ‘Pass bet’ is where the shooter bets that he will throw a 7 or 11 on the ‘come-out’ roll or will make a point before the next 7. ‘Don’t pass bet’ is the reverse of ‘Pass bet’. The bet is placed against the shooter and wins if 2, 3 or 12 are thrown on the come out roll or if he fails to make the point. There is the ‘Come’ and ‘Don’t come’ bet which is similar to the ‘Pass’ and ‘Don’t pass bet’ but is not made on the ‘come-out’ roll. A win bet can be placed by betting which number (4,5,6,8,9 and 10) will be rolled before a seven is rolled. ‘Loose bet’ is the reverse of ‘Win bet’. ‘Field bet’ is a bet on the outcome of the next throw. ‘Hardways’ bet is a rather risky one where the bet is placed that a specific number will be rolled in double before a seven or before the number is rolled in other combination. ‘Any Seven’ pays 5 to 1 if seven is rolled in next throw. ‘Any Craps’ pays 8 to 1 if a Crap is thrown in next roll. Similarly there is also ‘Craps 2’, ‘ Craps twelve’, ‘Craps three’ and ‘Eleven’. |
